Of apathetic Professors and their ruined Students
Yesterday the results of Calcutta University were declared. One student’s result was disastrous. She saw the score and went into shock. She sould not speak, could not blink, could not cry. She just kept on mumbling her registration number. This student comes from a lower-middle class family and is the first one in her family to enter higher studies. She could not belive what just hit her. Her life was ruined, at least in those first few moments.
What did the Professors do?
They saw her, ignored her and went scurrying to their cars to beat hasty retreats. Why? Many have not bothered to take classes the whole year. In fact, one of them had confided to me that it was useless to take classes when the government pays them whether they take classes or not. So now when this girl is half- dead all but one professor stayed back. She took her to the government hospital where equally indifferent doctors on government payroll cursorily treated her. They were aghast that this lady bothered to bring her student to the hospital. The doctor on duty kindly explained to this brave professor that one should never take to heart the plight of poor people. Is she mad? The actions of this one colleague makes me believe that I too am in the right profession. None can be teachers by profession; only by vocation.
The student’s mom came to the hospital and took her away.
All this happened yesterday.
Most college and University teachers in India today are apathetic to their students’ lots. They could not care a whit whether the students failed or passed. This callous class knows that their coffers will be filled whether they teach or not; students be damned.
When I got to know of this whole evil saga, I decided to carry on posting here. For there indeed is need for some solace in this blighted world.
In fact, I have decided to post thrice daily from now. Use each post along with the prayer I shall append to each post. If you are an atheist, then just ignore the prayer bit. Pause to reflect on the post itself.
