Reading 253 , from A Farewell to Arms

Cover of a Book!!

I knew I did not love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her. This was a game, like bridge, in which you said things instead of playing cards. Like bridge you had to pretend you were playing for money or playing for some stakes. Nobody had mentioned what the stakes were. It was all right with me…

A Farewell to Arms

My notes:

Hemingway talks of a macho guy who’s going to have a very memorable affair with the aforementioned Catherine Barkley during the Great War. Yet, notice the very real scheming in his character. The Freudian ID speaks.

I love Hemingway.
