Reading 213, from The Daily Telegraph Books of Obituaries

Laura riding

Laura Riding

…in the last analysis the life of Laura Riding must serve as chiefly as a cautionary tale — of cleverness unsanctified by humility, of power unredeemed by benevolence, and above all of human presumption swallowed up in the vast indifference of eternity.

The Very Best of The Daily Telegraph Books of Obituaries

ed. by Hugh Massingberd

My notes:

I am sure none of us would want to be remembered as Ms Riding is remembered here. The individual obituary is a masterpiece in literary caricature. Beyond that, it is a chronicle of a soul who could learn nothing from Robert Graves, indeed pulled him down. Reader, BEWARE.
