Reading 56, from Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay

Family

Settled family life beckons. Without a family, one wonders why one should toil, who will give me a glass of water when I am ill etc. etc. The strong and independent mind which can exult in the fullness of freedom in solitude and meets those intoxicating sensations from the myriad exterior world, was not the mind of the simple school teacher Mr. Khetra. But so what? He was not any the less for it. It only matters how one desires to live life. Life reveals itself as one wishes life to be. This is fulfilment. Are there any rules to enjoy life?

Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay

My notes:

The transcreation from the vernacular Bengali is mine. Watch the classic Aparajito (The Undefeated) adapted from this great writer by Satyajit Ray. Bandopadhyay, I bet can oust Dickens and Hardy in his evocations of poverty, nature and the country life.
