Reading 17, from the Mahabharata

Scene from the Mahabharata

Yaksha:

Who is the enemy hard to defeat, and which the endless disease? Which man is considered as good and which one as bad?

Yudhistira:

Anger is the enemy hard to defeat, avarice the endless disease. He is considered as good who is kind to all beings; as bad is considered he who knows no pity.

The Mahabharata

NotesĀ

Yakshas are types of spirits akin to daemons in Renaissance literature.

Yudhistira was the eldest brother among the Pandavas. Allegorically he represents Truth or Dharma.

The text used here is Maurice Winternitz’s classic A History of Indian Literature.

Prof. P. Lal is transcreating this ancient Sanskrit epic word by word. A very noble effort.
